I'd Only Recommend It To True Fans

I've been a huge fan of the Goosebumps books ever since I was younger (I'm 19 now, and although I rarely read them anymore, nothing is more nostalgic for me than digging through my box of Goosebumps books and flipping through them).
Having said that, I must say that the Goosebumps Graphix can probably only be appreciated by fans like myself. Anyone picking up these books without being able to appreciate them as Goosebumps adaptations would most likely find them cheesy, short, and messy.
I've only read #3 (Scary Summer), and here is my review:
"Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes" was well-done graphically, although the first several pages seemed too rushed and and it only started showing a real plot about halfway through.
"Ghost Beach" was by far the best of the three, combining very dark and appropriate artistry with a decent adaptation of the original material, although the plot twist at the end wasn't as well-adapted as it could have been.
"The Horror of Camp Jellyjam", one of the more quirky books of the original series, was my least favorite here. The drawing style seemed to be ripped right out of a newspaper comic strip, and the artist just didn't seem to put too much thought into properly adapting the plot and fleshing out the frames (many of the backgrounds were left blank, other than the occasional tree or stick figure).
It was nice to see short biographies of the three authors at the end of the book, showcasing their past works and adaptation methods.
Overall, I think the Goosebumps Graphix series is a well-though-out idea, and I really enjoyed seeing the different writing and art styles depicted in each story. I hope to see more books like this in the future.

Great books for non readers

My son does not like to read, however, the graphix novels really grab his attention and keep it, probably because it is more like a comic book. He can't put them down and that makes me very happy!

My daughter loved it

I purchased three of the Goosebumps Graphix books for my seven year old. She’s really gotten into some of the other graphic type books like Baby Mouse, Smile/Sisters, etc., so I thought with that combined with her interest in anything spooky she may enjoy these. She read all three in one day and even read one twice. She said that they were scary but they didn’t seem to give her nightmares or be over the top. Great books for those who are still a little young for the traditional Goosebumps books.

Solid book ... read the title!

This is a solid book that covers exactly what the title promises, in exactly the way the title implies.

Some buyers will read the subtitle and expect this book to be a comprehensive guide to making short animated films. Others will expect a complete guide to using Blender for creating animation. You get a little of both in this book, and that is a good thing. It's not a book about Blender, or about making short films, but a book about the process of using Blender to make short films. In that subtle distinction lies the basis for one of the most useful books on my sagging, overloaded Blender shelf.

Chapter by chapter, author Roland Hess walks the reader through the creation process of his own short film, "The Snowmen." Starting with a rough story idea, he proceeds through scripting, storyboarding, dialogue, music, audio, animatics, rendering, editing, compositing, etc. While this is interesting, hundreds of other books on filmmaking cover the same subjects, most of them in more depth.

Where this book shines is in linking the generic concepts to the particulars of using Blender. (It's a book on Blender production, remember?) While any book on digital filmmaking will cover making animatics, for example, this one goes into detail on making OGL previews from Blender's 3D viewport and combining them with stills and audio in the Sequence Editor. The expected checklist of render cheats and gotchas is specifically tailored to the UI and terminology of Blender 2.5/2.6. There's even coverage of the Grease Pencil tool as an animator's aid.

"Blender Production" makes the jump from "good" to "essential" in the chapter on project setup and file management. Hess is a fanatic about organization, and once you've spent a few minutes boggling over the sheer amount of data required to make a few seconds of "The Snowmen," you will be too. His project layout is straightforward, logical, and clearly explained in every detail. Likewise well-explained is the workflow that accompanies it. If you follow along with the downloadable project files (you ARE following along, aren't you?), you'll know exactly how to create assets, store them, and share them with a team without breaking a link or dropping a polygon. There are other guides to project management in Blender, but I've found none that are simpler, clearer, and better suited to the needs of a single-person or small-team project.

If you're in the market for a more general book about Blender's movie making tools, pick up Tony Mullen's "Blender Studio Projects: Digital Movie Making." Between that book and this one, you'll have everything you need to tackle a short film in Blender except time, imagination, and persistence. You'll have to supply those things on your own. :-)

Ane excellent book for the more advanced Blender user

For a relatively small program, Blender is far from lightweight. In fact, it incorporates almost an entire video production suite and this is the first book I've seen that addresses Blender from the point of view of video and animation workflow. There are other resources out there that address rigging, sculpting, polygon flow, video editing and compositing and so forth, but what this book does spectacularly well is guide you through the planning and execution of a small animation: the sort of thing anybody might try to do, but which so often fails because of an incomplete grasp of the complexity of the process.

In a series of chapters beginning with an overview of the whole project, Hess lays out very clearly and from obvious experience how to solve problems before they occur. Chapters on "Story", "Organization", and "Managing Animation At The Project Level" I found particularly helpful, dealing with first--how to not bite off more than you can chew, second--how to set up files and naming conventions to keep track of the surprisingly large amount of stuff, and third--how to not go mad from keeping track of where you are in the process.

In sum, the book is very much like having an experienced producer at your back--not giving you too much guidance on the art but being really, really helpful about getting the thing done.

Fast Food and Fun! Myrtles hunt for a new pasttime is a Hoot!

Another great Myrtle Clover book! I've enjoyed all of them and even got my husband reading them. The characters are well developed but still hold some surprises in each new book. You also have the familiar relationship with Myrtle and her son Red, but she never ceases to surprise this octogenarian, as well as her steady sidekick, Miles. I loved that Miles cousin was more involved in this one and it lead to a truly surprise ending!
This one combines sleuthing with snooping, of the eavesdropping kind!

Keep them coming Elizabeth!

Loved This - Can't Wait for the Next Myrtle Clover Novel!!!

I read a lot of mysteries, and out of all of them, Myrtle Clover is currently my favorite! The things that I love best about this cozy mystery series are the witty banter between her and her son, Red, and her neighbor and side kick, Miles. I also like how the author literally has us walking alongside of Myrtle as she pieces the clues together and solves the mystery before the police! I can barely stand the wait in between novels!

This is another really good Myrtle Clover mystery. I really enjoy reading these cozy mysteries and am now looking forward to the next one. I started reading these on Kindle but I just enjoy having the real book in my hands. Congratulations to ms. Craig on another great mystery.

I received this cookbook this weekend. I have tried a few recipes and find it easy to use. I love the champagne cupcakes. I also like that it gives great options for appetizers and party food beyond the cupcakes. The quiches, tarts, pies and cheesecakes all look great. I can't wait to try more. This would be a great book for families as kids would have a great time making a wide variety of cupcakes. It is also great for entertainers and others who want to impress their guests.

I have a large collection of cookbooks, but I can already tell this one will be a FAVORITE. Who would have thought you could make Crab Rangoon, Tomato Bruschetta, or Coconut Cream Tarts in a cupcake maker? I love this cookbook!

Recipes are not easy and they make a LOT of cupcakes

This book was not what I expected. I thought it would have a number of easy recipes (not too many ingredients, very quick to make) that made a few batches of mini cupcakes for my cute little cupcake maker. Instead, most of the recipes have many ingredients and require artistic skills to put together - and many would make quite a few mini cupcakes, 34 or 36 - that' a lot of batches. This book really was not for me. The "Easy" in the name "175 Best Babycakes Cupcake Maker Recipes: Easy Recipes for Bite-Size Cupcakes, Cheesecakes, Mini Pies and More!" did not seem to fit. The cakes look fancy and sound delicious.

*Starred Review* This excellent, sumptuously illustrated book accompanied the exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York that ran from December 2011 to March 2012. It has six introductory essays and analyzes 138 portraits in painted panels, pencil drawings, marble sculpture, and bronze medals. In time, Flemish realism brilliantly fused with Italian humanism to create a new sense of the value of the individual personality and to place a correspondingly high value on the portrait itself. This innovative art justified Hans Holbein’s proud inscription on his portrait of Derich Born, who lacked only breath to seem truly alive and responsive: “Add but the voice and you have his whole self, that you may doubt whether the painter or the father has made him.” These Renaissance artists explored their ideal of beauty—women with blonde hair, high foreheads, fair complexions, and long necks—and also sought to reveal virtue, the inward character, through the subject’s outward appearance. Techniques of portraiture evolved from the simple to the complex forms that have endured to the present day. In about 1425, subjects were depicted in stark profile or as dual portraits against a dark background. Later they were presented full face, establishing eye contact with the observer, set against a deeper space and an open window with an expansive background. An ugly nose but a beautiful painting

This book is the catalog for a wonderful exhibition at the Met in NYC, which benefited from major loans from all over the world, especially from the Louvre, the Queen of England's private collection and Italian museums. From the cover illustration (a masterpiece by Ghirlandaio), to great drawings by Pisanello, works by Mantegna, Boticelli, Antonello da Messina (who imported the oil painting technique to Italy, learning it from the Flemish), sculptures, medals, prints, the art of the Renaissance portrait is studied in depth, with each work accompanied by a thorough essay and a detailed historical provenance.

The quality of the reproductions is among the best I have seen in any artbook. Probably one of the best art publications to come to the market in recent years.

This is another blockbuster catalogue from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It accompanied the exhibition of the same name mounted first at the Bode-Museum in Berlin in August 2011 and continuing in New York until March 2012. It is a magnificent volume and has justly proved so much in demand that a second printing was necessary, causing a temporary hiatus in its availability. Anyone interested in Renaissance art or in the history of portraiture would be well advised to acquire it now at its original publication price, because it is an absolute must-have and, at 420 pages, is likely to remain the definitive study for some time. Five very informative introductory essays by eminent art historians introduce and discuss the major issues involved in considering the art. These are followed by a catalogue of 168 excellent reproductions, each expertly commented by a specialist in the field and accompanied by full historical provenance and a list of selected references (and there is also an excellent index and general bibliography). The scholarship is so up-to-date that I encountered at least one reference to an article published just a few months before the catalogue itself.

The scope is broad, and although the emphasis is on painting, all the other major media--bronze, brass, marble, terra-cotta and the all-important portrait medal (pride of the aristocracy because of its durability and ease of reproduction and transportation)--are also fully considered. And although the great majority of the artists presented are Italian, some Northerners like Rogier van der Weyden and his pupil Hans Memling are also discussed in terms of their relationship with Italian patrons. The organization of the material follows a geographical distribution from Florence through the central Italian courts (Ferrara, Mantua, Rome, etc.) to Venice and the Veneto, so that, as one essayist puts it, what emerges is a "geography of likeness" (9), enabling us to appreciate the differences in regional styles. But the historical trajectory is equally important, and it is fascinating to follow the career of the portrait from Donatello's reliquary bust of Saint Rossore (ca. 1425 and technically not a "portrait" at all) to the emergence of more modern autonomous likenesses toward the end of the century. This is a major comprehensive study, and as the book itself is manufactured to the highest production standards, it is a physical, intellectual, and aesthetic delight.

David M. Friedman's A Mind of Its Own is a cultural examination of the penis, from ancient Sumer to the present. Friedman convincingly suggests that humankind's various and contradictory attitudes toward the penis have been instrumental in mapping the course of both Western civilization and world history.

Friedman begins with pagan attitudes: ancient Greeks considered the penis a measure of a man's proximity to "divine power," while the Romans, whose generals were known to promote soldiers based on penis size, saw it as an indicator of earthly strength. Thanks to the spread of Christianity, the "sacred staff became the demon rod"--a fearful manifestation of the devil. Theology gave way, grudgingly, to science. In the Renaissance, anatomical discoveries allowed for the possibility that this "agent of death" was, in fact, only a "blameless instrument of reproduction." Subsequent chapters discuss the penis's role as a racial yardstick; its "defining role in human personality" as asserted by Freud; its politicization; and finally, through the likes of Viagra, its objectification as a "thing ... impervious to religious teachings, psychological insights, racial stereotypes and feminist criticism."

Friedman's study of what he calls the "symbolic muscle" is filled with fascinating side trips (castration cults, ancient graffiti, the anti-masturbation "semen-retention movement," aphrodisiacs through the ages, and, to modern eyes, risible medical practices with the likes of monkey glands), as well as a rich cast of characters (Leonardo da Vinci, John Kellogg of cornflake fame, Kate Millet, Clarence Thomas, and Walt Whitman). "Over time, the penis has been deified, demonized, secularized, racialized, psychoanalyzed, politicized and, finally, medicalized," declares freelance journalist Friedman in a serious yet entertaining book that weaves together an enormous amount of material. In the Greek and Roman worlds, statues of figures with erections were commonplace, he observes, though by the Christian era, the penis had become a source of evil and weakness. Doctors and scientists from da Vinci onward "deflat[ed] the religious rhetoric" and scrutinized the male organ sometimes with untoward results, as when American "semen science" led to the creation of antimasturbation products such as Graham crackers. Western man's fear of the African phallus undergirded colonialism and slavery, and resonates to this day, Friedman argues, as was evident in the case of Clarence Thomas. If some of Freud's case histories might be questioned, Friedman notes how the psychoanalytic interpretation enduringly places the penis and associated anxieties at the fulcrum of society. The rise of feminism put the penis in its place, as The Hite Report pointed out the limits of conventional intercourse in moving women to orgasm, and as Andrea Dworkin exposed penile pathology though the author concludes that male sexuality arises more out of evolutionary strategy than misogyny. His final and liveliest chapter concerns the medicalization of the penis, culminating in Viagra. Even though Friedman quotes a (female) sex therapist on the limits of such drugs, he concludes optimistically that "the erection industry" has performed a paradigm shift, allowing man to impose his will below his belt. The book has a few gaps -- there's little about the gay penis -- but it should reign as the seminal treatment of this topic (and inspire many more puns).

An impressively research-prone journalist who has written for Esquire, Rolling Stone, and the Village Voice, Friedman has prepared a catalog of happenings and horrors perpetrated on the penis or in the name of the penis as an organ and as an idea. His opening chapter about religious teachings begins with a ghastly story about the torture of a witch who "knew the Devil's penis." Next come Tissot and the medical antimasturbation mania, plus biological discoveries about the organ. This is followed by an even more terrible and detailed discussion of racist stereotypes and violence relating to supposedly macrophallic Africans. Chapter 4 belongs to Dr. Freud, Chapter 5 to feminist criticism, and Chapter 6 to Viagra and the erection industry since ancient Egypt. Referenced in considerable (if not perfect) detail, the work could be improved only by textual subheads and (perhaps) illustrations. A fascinating and sobering complement to more lighthearted books, including Maggie Paley's The Book of the Penis (Grove, 2001), Joseph Cohen's The Penis Book (Konemann, 2001), and Kit Schwartz's The Male Member (St. Martin's, 1985). Owner's Manual

With chapter titles such as The Demon Rod, The Gear Shift, The Measuring Stick, The Cigar, The Battering Ram--how can you loose with giving this book as a gift to yourself, if you own a penis. Or to a spouse or lover if he has one.

"A man can hold his manhood in his hand, but who is really gripping whom?" The book is worth it for this Big Question alone.

As a retired priest I was a bit surprised that Friedman was spot on with the Roman Catholic theologian, Augustine:

"Augustine, the sainted Bishop of Hippo, found his answer sixteen centuries ago in a man's lack of control. It was a proof of man's alienation from the sacred, and a punishment for Adam's insult of God in Eden that original sin passed from one generation to the next through semen. In a culture where the Virgin symbolized all that was pure, the penis stood for all that was evil. What defined Mary's sanctity was her lack of contact with a penis."

This book seems as much poetry, humor and history as it is a polemic. Are you an all power to the penis type person? Then read this book. I'm glad I bought it.

interesting historiography

*A Mind of Its Own* started off fantastic, opening with how witches were burned for having contact with the "devil's rod". However, the book's ending wasn't quite as great, concluding with impotence and Viagra.

Friedman presented how the penis was viewed, throughout history, through various lens: historical, social, religious, psychological, medical and feminist. My only problem with this book was that the last half was mostly medical (Freud, psychology, psychoanalysis, penile reconstruction, testicular transplants, impotence, etc.). So, the end became a little dry.

There were a lot of information and tidbits that I didn't know about the penis. I'm sure that we're familiar about the Greek and Roman's view on and culture around the penis. However, there are so much more to know about these people. The pagan and the religious views were interesting as well. It was amazing to see that the early Christians had numerous dialogues on the penis, especially the semen.

I was very interested in reading about the history of the correlation between penis size and race. This wasn't about how a race or an ethnic group have been stereotyped on their penis size. It was more about the white view of the black penis and how they responded to it.

The feminist view on the penis was enlightening. I've always wanted to know exactly how it started and it pretty much made sense. However, it was interesting to see how the penis have divided women among themselves, despite them being avowed feminists.

I think there are so much more that Friedman could have covered in the cultural history of the penis. I wish that Friedman had included the pop cultural view of the penis. I can only think of one example that Friedman did. He mentioned Robert Mapplethorne's (sp?) (who was gay) controversial photo of a semi-erect black penis. Speaking of gay, I'm surprised that Friedman didn't bring up the homosexual view of the penis.

Nonetheless, you're going to read about so many people who have made a contribution or an impact on the penis. Such people are Da Vinci, Thomas Clarence, Freud and so many more. If you've always been curious how the penis have been viewed throughout history, then this book is for you.

Informative and More than a little Amusing...

Including various famous historical figures and their amusing associations about the purpose and inner workings of the penis. Da Vinci, Rousseau,Twain, Whitman, just a few of the cultural geniuses discussed.
From demon rod, to gear shift, to holiest of holies, an interesting look at the male fascination with his own genital organs in all their complexity...lol.
