Solid bridge to Ph.D. econometrics with no linear algebra

Although I have recently completed my masters in economics, my econometrics background is not strong enough to perform decent analyses. In our school, we were introduced to the subject with "Using econometrics: A practical Approach" by Studdentmund. And while it is appropriate for an undergraduate course in econometrics, it lacks of sufficient detail and statistical theory to perform more serious researches. That's where Ashley's textbook kicks in.

I haven't got to the bulk of the textbook, but it is meant to be a bridge between undergrad econometrics and ph.d. level econometrics, since it does not use linear algebra to explain what can be done with discrete mathematics. So far, i'm loving it.

Los Angeles photographer Michael Stokes has spent years searching out these photos and building an archive of over 500 images. His collection includes soldiers and sailors from Australia, England, France, Italy, Poland, Russia, and the USA, cavorting on the sand in the South Pacific, shivering in the snow of Eastern Europe, posing solo in the barracks, and in great happy groups just about everywhere. These images show men barely out of boyhood, at their physical peak, responding to the reality of battle by living each day to the fullest—a side of the war never before made public.

Naked soldiers caught naked

This book is chock full of soldiers bare-assed or frontally naked. The men in the photos are shown in the shower, at a beach, on their bunks, etc. It is casual nudity of men living and working together. There are several pictures of naked men at play, such as one man sitting on another's shoulders in a lake. These are men, who were comfortable with one another without homophobia coming into play. It was innocent camaraderie without it being sexual. A lot of men would not like the thought of one guy's bare balls resting on his shoulder. These are average guys in the army caught exposing themselves in real-life situations. Not all of the guys are hunks, but they are all beautiful.

Beautiful photography book that is well worth the purchase price!

Great photography book! IF you were to judge a book by the cover, this one would be the winner. Beautiful cover, nice pictures, good historical commentary. Just an all around great book. I collect photography books and this is one of my new top favorites. It is also more reasonable in price than many photography books that are not as good. If you are interested in the male form or history, this is the book for you. The pictures give the viewer a peak of men in a natural, uncensored way, during a time of their sexual awakening and innocence without social labels. It is refreshing to see pictures that are not posed, or touched up like most contemporary photography books (especially gay male erotica). This book has value for its historical, as well as photographic images.

Rare view of WWII presented with quality and finesse.

Wow, so interesting and great that these were published. Show male bonding in a way that does not exist anymore due to homophobia. This is a time when guys could be guys and were not concerned so much about showing affection or looking gay. Its a nice history of WWII that has not been shown before. Quality book and fun really for anyone.

Excellent introduction to Python3

I wrote my first line of code, in ForTran77, in 1986. I've written a pretty good bit of code since then in a variety of languages. This is an excellent primer if you want to learn Python3 syntax. For those that have never written any code...this should still be pretty easy for you. The coding examples are straightforward.

As with any book on language syntax, there is errata in this one. Unlike other people who complain about errata in text books like this one, I don't. Debugging is part of code-writing. It's hard for new people today, just as it was hard on new people when I first start writing code almost 30 years ago. It is monumentally frustrating if you're new, but it's the price you must pay if you want to learn this skill.

Don't be discouraged with the book's errata, or your own mistakes. Part of your learning curve is understanding what the interpreters error messages mean when you execute your scripts.

The author walks you through installation (for Windows, Mac, and Linux), modifying your path variable (don't worry if you don't know what that is), and executing simple scripts.

If you're completely new to coding, or have lots of experience, this is a great intro to the basics of Python.

Concise, clear Python 3.X introduction

I have poked around the web for simple introductions to Python 3.x for a week and this is perfect for someone familiar with some basic programming. For reference, I'm familiar with VBA, R, SAS and a little awk and this was perfect for me. You can find all of the same information on python.org, but this is presented in a much smoother tone with better explanation.

One call-out for the Kindle Version, you can't copy-and-paste text from the Cloud Reader so all examples will have to be retyped manually. None of the examples are complicated enough that this is a real problem, but it's something I hadn't considered when I bought it.

Like I said above, this information is free elsewhere, but the even tone and concise explanations were well worth the small amount I paid.

Just kind of blah...

This book was profoundly disappointing. Although it lives up to its claim to being a true beginners book, I have found far better resources for free online. For example, this free online book/course - [...] - is far, far, far better than Cannon's book (I have no affiliation whatsoever with the interactivepython.org website). I felt that Cannon largely just spat out different facts about the Python language, but didn't make much of an attempt to teach his readers how to think like a computer scientist. The authors of the online book I mention do a much better job of this - of all the beginner resources I have read, the interactivepython.org is by far the best. It is designed for true beginners and allows you to practice what you are learning right from the web browser. Cannon's book was a very dry read, whereas the online book I mention is entertaining. Save yourself some money and skip this book. It's by no means awful ...just kind of blah. I'm utterly baffled by how many five star reviews it has.

Influenced my life!

In 1970 I was trying to survive as a 12 year old who had recently moved, and was having trouble making friends in a new school and completely different culture. This book was on my mother's shelves. I grabbed it, devoured it all...and applied Barbara Walter's insights and knowledge THE REST OF MY LIFE--EVERYDAY. There's a story where she must interview a significant world leader...does her homework...finds out what he is REALLY interested in...which happens to be growing tomatoes in his garden. She spends her time talking to him about HIS interests, then goes for the typical interview. The lessons apply for making friends, working in any situation, communicating effectively. Ironically 35 years later I was applying this same strategy while interviewing a celebrity myself. Instead of talking about the NFL, we talked about the birth of his child. The piece was wonderful...and yes, it did cycle around to his Super Bowl experiences. But it was Barbara's training that showed me how to tap into people and dig out the nuggests of pure gold. It's classic!

Can be life-changing

I read this book almost forty years ago, when I was an extremely introverted pre-teenager, subject even to self-judging suicidal thoughts. I had just moved halfway across the country, a move I actually welcomed because I was willing to get a fresh start with a new school and new friends, if that might be possible. Nevertheless in my new environment, I was still the same shy, nerdy person I had always been - always more eager to avoid people than engage with them. At the heart of my dilemma were the twin worrisome questions: "What should I SAY?" and "Why did I say THAT?"

I took the lessons of the book to heart, adopting the attitude that a good conversationalist doesn't have to say anything, but rather can ask almost anything. It helped me survive my teen years, moved me away from low self-esteem towards self-confidence, prepared me for a college degree in mass communications and is responsible in large part for making me someone that others enjoy being with.

Gentle and lovely

Whenever I observe Barbara Walters on television she has shown calm and composure consistently. Reading the hardback first edition of "How to Talk with Practically Anybody about Practically Anything" I was amazed and totally taken in on all her purposeful little details of kindness woven through her plans of action. In her chapters she has great timing with laugh out loud humor woven throughout. Initially I had planed to brief this book, pick out chapters, not go through the whole thing word for word, but her writing pulled me in with gentle attraction, what a darling woman. Reading this book gives me fresh picture of authenticity in the human being, Barbara Walters. What a lovely lady.

Beautiful story!!!

Sam is another one of those authors who's books are automatic buys for me. Henry and April have been fighting their feelings for each other for a long time but they finally come together. I like the fact that they took their time because the feelings of guilt are on both sides and they have to overcome that. You'll have to read the book to understand why they feel guilty, but trust me, it's great!!! When Sam writes a book like this, I love it because we usually get to see the couple years down the road and see get a glimpse of what their lives have been like. This is one book I'm sure I will read over and over.

This is a short read but it felt like a full novel to me

This my first book by this author but I have brought a couple of her books which I have not read so far and will have to get on with that.

This is Henry and April's story. This is a short read but it felt like a full novel to me. After how Julia betrayed them both, I hated how they allowed her memory and their guilty for loving each other make they waste so much time being apart instead of being together. I loved how Henry was gruff in the story he was just plain aggressive but it was because he had to bottle up so much of his emotions inside of him instead of letting the woman he loved know how much he cared about her.

I enjoyed the story. I would read more from this author.

Loved It!

I truly enjoyed this book. April and Henry are well written characters with a wonderful storyline. I enjoyed the theme of the story. It was nice to see them get closer and learn some important things surrounding the death of her friend. I liked seeing them get to their happy ending.
