He assembled some partners and put out a newspaper ad: "Brokerage wanted." Days later, Lemann began running what would become the cornerstone of his fortune and those of over 200 other people. Enlightening book with several messages and information

While reporting actual facts, the book presents subtly both “the Brazilian-way of doing business” as well as the evolution of the financial industry in Brazil, namely the activities of investment banks, private equity and asset management, besides shedding light on material topics on corporate finance, namely cash management, budgeting, and merger and acquisitions (M&A). Thus, this book provides intertwined case studies to professionals and students willing to learn and debate with a practitioner outlook several concepts and ideas on strategy and finance, whose development is essential to the well-being of those societies that have the goal to be ranked among the most prosperous and respected in the world. (I have already published a similar review in Portuguese on the book at Amazon.com.br).
Actually, I read firstly the English translation, which I, as a finance professor at Ibmec Business School in Rio Janeiro, assigned as a recommended reading within a subject held in English on a financial analysis course. Later, I ultimately read the original Portuguese edition, which was already appreciated by undergraduate students on an introductory course on “International Finance” also under my responsibility at Ibmec Business School in Rio de Janeiro. Both books were written with diligence and care, delivering a very pleasant, instructive read.

More suitable for first time calculus learner

My daughter used this book and my son used the book by Ron Larson in their high school AP calculus class.

I think this book gets to the major points in a simpler and less obscured approach. Larson's book is more comprehensive with way more approves and theory that results in losing focus and lost in the maze for some first time students.

In short, this book is better for students intend to major in Engineering and Ron Larson's book for people intend to major in mathematics and theoretical physics from my observation.

Stunning Book For Any Xenophile

This book is amazing. Softcover, and with Japanese text of course. It's basically the Xenoblade equivalent to Xenogears Perfect Works, though it doesn't seem quite as packed full of info (but this is hard to say as I can not read any of it). The book has a foldout poster, official art of all the main characters, event & location art, early character sketches, some funny pics (like Fiora and Melia in bikinis or the party in tuxedos and dresses) but where the book really shines is the the mech designs. The designs themselves are so unique and unlike any other giant robots in any other series. The book goes into a lot of detail on the mechs, showing how they move, their propulsion systems, weapons and more. If you're a Xenoblade fan, don't hesitate, pick this up, it will amaze you. If you're worried about not being able to read it, don't worry, there's plenty of enjoyment in the art alone.

Fantastic artbook. Great for collectors

Fantastic artbook. Great for collectors. It's written in Japanese, with a few direct translations. It has a bit over 250 pages, lots of images. Really fun to look at (mainly because I can't read Japanese). The booklet has concept art for the game, along with information about characters. It should go without saying that it would be good idea to finish the game first, because the book contains many spoilers spoilers in pictures and most likely in text also.
Would recommend for collectors.

The art is beautiful and everything is very detailed. Sure, I can't understand it since it's in japanese, however I do not regret buying this in the slightest.

Kindle Edition not in Parallel

This review is specific to the Kindle Edition of this book.

As I child, I spoke German fluently, but over the years I have forgotten most of it. I bought this book for my Kindle because I thought that reading stories in German would be a good first step towards restoring my fluency, with the parallel text acting as "training wheels" for my vocabulary.

As of the time of this writing, the other reviews are universally positive. As they are all focused on the print edition, I believe that they are correct to rate this book highly: the stories are excellent. The translations are decent, and are supported by very good notes. If it weren't for the problems with the Kindle Edition, I would give this book at least four stars.

Unfortunately, this book was not well adapted to the Kindle. The value of a parallel text lies in the fact that it is, well, parallel: the two languages are side-by-side for easy comparison and reference. Unfortunately, this Kindle edition instead presents an entire story in German, followed by the entire story in English. In order to cross-reference between the two you have to manually page back and forth between the two versions. For the shorter stories this is only a minor inconvenience, but for the longer stories it becomes unbearably cumbersome. I would strongly recommend that the publisher modify the Kindle Edition of this book to provide some semblance of a parallel reading experience. The best solution would be to split the screen (either vertically or horizontally), but that might not be technically feasible within the constraints of the Kindle book format and software. Another solution would be to interleave the stories by paragraph: present the first paragraph in German, immediately followed by the same paragraph in English, then the second paragraph in German, etc. At the very least, take the text as it currently stands and add paragraph-by-paragraph hyperlinks back and forth between the English and German versions to make it easy to jump back and forth between the two versions.

If the Kindle Edition of this book is modified to provide a better parallel reading experience, then I will modify this review to reflect the change.

Decent collection

Pros
1. Parallel texts on pages facing each other makes it easy and fast practice reading.
2. The stories are literary and of interest to students of German literature. (They may be boring for some people, but I am a literature student.) As such, you will run across colloquial and dated phrases and grammar variations which will definitely help you get the sense of written German.
3. The book is small, light, and a reasonable length. I stick it in my backpack to carry to school.

Cons:
1. The translations are not *exactly* as literal as the book claims to be, but they are nonetheless extremely faithful and will help you figure out unfamiliar words and phrases without needing to go to a dictionary for one or two words.
2. The German and English pages don't *exactly* match up (sometimes the German for the bottom of an English translation is found on the top of the next page instead). It's usually only a sentence or two.

Other comments:
1. Good for an advanced intermediate (or just advanced) reader. One thing I tried early on was to read an entire page (then an entire story) in English, then go back and read the German again--that helps if you are just at the intermediate level and can't handle only German yet.

Excellent Language Tool

Short stories in both English and German help the reader gain foreign language skills. This book is laid out well, with English on the right and the German text on the left. This is the Level One book but that is not to say it is for beginners. While I think it would be useful to all German students on some level, students with at least intermediate skills would benefit the most. The stories are interesting and varied and while I believe it to be secondary to the books purpose, most readers will find at least one to their taste.

About the Author
Natalie Baszile has an MA in Afro American Studies from UCLA and earned an MFA at the Warren Wilson Program for Writers. She lives in San Francisco with her family.

Inheriting a Sugarcane Plantation Brings Troubles and Romance

When her father dies, Charley Bordelon is surprised to inherit an 800 acre sugarcane plantation in Louisiana. She knows nothing about raising sugarcane. Her father wasn't a farmer either, but he mortgaged everything he had to buy these 800 acres.

Charley is a widow with a preteen daughter. She badly needs a fresh start and the only option is the sugarcane plantation. She settles in with her delightful grandmother, Miss Honey, and her other relatives. The one blot on the horizon is her half-brother. He has been in trouble most of his life; now he's back, and he resents that Charley got the whole inheritance.

Learning the sugarcane business isn't easy, particularly since no one wants to help her. Charley struggles against the odds and the desire to give up, but eventually finds help and a surprising romance.

The unusual characters and the lovely setting make this book a delight to read. I enjoyed the descriptions of farm life, but they could be tedious to someone with no background in farming. I also found the plot rather slow even when Charley finds romance. She does a great deal of talking to herself about her troubles and it becomes repetitious. However, the setting and characters make it worth the read.

Best Read for me in a long time!

OK, so this is a first for me. I have never written a review before. I just finished the book and absolutely loved it! The story, the characters, the themes, the details and the descriptive imagery are all wonderful. I was thoroughly entertained and really did not want to put the book down. I read a lot and this book is by far my favorite in quite awhile. I recommending it to all my friends. I really can see the story as a movie as well. I have even fantasized about the actors and actresses who might be great in the character roles. I look forward to more stories from Natalie Baszile!

Transport yourself to the Bayou

I read this atmospheric novel of the Louisiana sugar cane farmers life in one sitting. It was the perfect book to curl up with on a rainy day. I could not put it down. Wish it was another 300 pages!
