The third edition of Southern's (music and Afro-American studies, emerita, Harvard) scholarly work chronicles the development of African American music, from the arrival of the first Africans at the English colonies in 1619 to the present. The evolution of various genres, instrumentation, minstrelsy, dance, religious aspects, recording companies, and musical theater are all dealt with meticulously. A chronology of important events at the beginning of each chapter and extensive bibliographies and discographies help greatly in navigating the massive amount of material. An important addition to this edition is expanded coverage of women composers and performers. The only drawback is the minimal coverage of the modern era: rhythm and blues, soul, rock'n'roll, and disco are covered in just ten pages. An invaluable reference work --

Have you ever heard about The National Negro Opera Company? Founded by Mary Cardwell Dawson, the company made its debut in Pittsburgh in 1941. This is but one of the fascinating things you can discover in this marvelous book. If you have an interest in music of whatever variety, your library is incomplete without this book.
This 3rd edition was done in 1997, thus it is quite up-to-date in its coverage of classical, jazz, rock, pop, gospel, swing, ragtime or blues. If it is music as practiced, performed or composed by people of color, this is where you'll find valuable information about it. Beginning with Africa and continuing to the present day, the four sections detail this rich history: Song in a Strange Land (1619-1775); Let My People Go (1776-1865); Blow Ye the Trumpet (1865-1919) and Lift Every Voice (1920-1996). The latter section is particularly informative reading with sections on Jazz, The Harlem Renaissance, and the Mid-Century Decades. It is these years in which artists of color finally took their well-deserved place on the musical stages of the world. Of course, they had been visible in their own world, and the popularity of such major composers as Scott Joplin and Duke Ellington allowed them to more or less effortlessly cross-over to the 'white' world. Lena Horne, the Mills Brothers, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway were--and still are--names to be reckoned with in any list of fabulous performers.
And then there was Marion Anderson who finally made her way to the Metropolitan Opera at the very end of her career, making way for Robert McFerrin, Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Simon Estes and George Shirley, who were very much pioneers in their respective repertoire. Today, thankfully, artists of color are not at all rare on the concert and/or opera stages of the world. But lest we forget the individual trauma these artists suffered in order to be able to compete in this way, we need to remember the past while we are glorying in the present. This book will, if you let it, open your mind and your ears to wonderful, glorious sounds, without which our world would be a much quieter and poorer place.
The author of this book is the renowned Eileen Southern (Professor Emerita of Music and Afro-American Studies at Harvard University) who is herself a musician as well as a writer, and is eminently qualified to illuminate The Music of Black Americans to the world in general.
Pages 613 through 646 comprise a rich bibliography and discography; the index takes up 41 pages. NO music lover should be without this invaluable reference work.

Cosa consigliare ad un appassionato di musica afro-americana che, conoscendo un po' di inglese, decidesse di leggere qualcosa per cui valga veramente la pena di fare un po' di fatica?
Personalmente non avrei molti dubbi: credo che l'opera più completa che esiste sul mercato e che associa alla competenza una buona leggibilità anche per chi non è di madre lingua sia proprio questo.
Eileen Southern è Professor Emerita di Musica e Studi Afro-americani alla Harvard University di Boston, fondatrice ed editrice della rivista The Black Perspective in Music, che è stata pubblicata dal 1973 al 1990, e autrice, coautrice ed editrice di numerosi volumi sulla musica e la cultura afroamericana.
Il libro in questione, di 678 pagine, ripercorre tutta la storia della musica afroamericana dalle origini (1619) fino all'ultimo decennio del XX secolo. L'opera è suddivisa in 14 capitoli ed è completata con un'accurata bibliografia e discografia e un indice dei nomi e dei temi.

There is so much information involved!!! She starts from the VERY beginning and smoothly takes you through the ride of African-American music. Each section is very thorough. This text is perfect for anyone who is researching the subject or just wants to gain knowledge on this rich music. A+++

About the Author
Charlie Guo lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, in the heart of the world he portrays. A software engineer by trade, he has also founded two companies. While getting his undergraduate degree at Stanford, he founded the education-tech company ClassOwl. ClassOwl partners with Stanford and other schools to improve student-teacher communication and productivity, and in startup-storybook fashion it was sold by Guo’s cofounders in 2015 to Branch Metrics. After graduation, he launched a second company, FanHero, which was accepted into Y Combinator, a prestigious startup accelerator program based in Silicon Valley. His own experiences working to make his ideas fly exposed him to the inner workings of the startup culture and inspired him to reach out to a fascinating mix of tech founders to share their experiences.

Quick read on how to scale the unscalable in startup world

I enjoyed this quick read that gave some real-world stories about the tough early stages of founding a startup. The best parts were the third-person summaries of the companies at the beginning of each chapter, and I wish there had been more of that. The other 90% of the book is in what I would consider "lightly-edited" interview format (e.g. "So we would have, I don't know, let's say incorporation - I can't remember what our actual services were, but we'd have an incorporation service - and we'd set the price..."). On pages 1-2, I thought, I can't read like this, the colloquial format will drive me crazy. By page 5, I didn't even notice.

The stories of each startup are interesting, but come to a common theme: if you do "unscalable" things and do them well, you'll eventually find a way to scale them. And also, always start with the customer.

Unscalable is a collection of interviews with founds of high growth start up companies, most of which are associated with Y Combinator (a startup accelerator). If you are the founder of a high tech startup or are considering becoming one I recommend it. The content is very raw but it's a quick read and the learnings are very clear.

It would have been great if the companies interviewed included some larger or more successful companies, since the vast major of companies interviewing in the book have not yet reached a level of sustainable success. It makes you question the learnings since many of these companies may eventually fail despite their experience so far. So, take everything you read here with a grain of salt.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Wanda is convinced that there is a monster in her closet. Her parents try to prove that there is nothing to fear, and her big brother makes fun of her. However, Granny comes in, listens at the closet door, and says, "Yep,- I do believe there's one in there." Then she appeals to her granddaughter's compassionate side, explaining that the monster must be uncomfortable in the closet with only a rubber boot on which to rest its head. The tactic works. Wanda creates a friendship with the imaginary creature, and 17 days later, as per Granny's decree, the intruder departs, with good-bye gifts. When Ruthie bewails the monster in her closet, Wanda is left to take her cousin under her wing and explain how to handle the situation. This story is a delightful variation of the hiding-monster theme popularized by Mercer Mayer's There's Something in My Attic and There's a Nightmare in My Closet (both Puffin, 1992) and James Howe's There's a Monster under My Bed (Atheneum, 1986). Spinelli adds the charming element of Wanda guiding her young relative through the fearful mysteries of childhood after vanquishing her own fears. Hayashi's pleasant watercolors, reminiscent of Mayer's style, accompany the text of this enjoyable story that will enrich most collections.

K-Gr. 2. On the heels of the movie Monsters, Inc., this picture book offers another entertaining twist on the scary monster-in-the-closet theme. When Granny suggests that monsters hide because they are shy, young Wanda learns to see nighttime through the eyes of the fearful creature. She tries to make his closet experience a bit more comfortable, throwing a pillow into the closet and reading him a story before bed. When Granny says it is time for the monster to move on, Wanda sends him a scarf and a card to see him on his way. But then it's her turn to comfort her fearful cousin, Ruthie, who is screaming about the monster in her closet. Hayashi's watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations do a great job of melding the real and the imaginary in Spinelli's story, staying true to the child's fearful fantasies and transforming them with warmth and affection. Our kids loved this book and the show!

Our 3 & 5 year old really enjoyed reading this book. It is very humorous and engaging and the kids love to role-play the story. It was recently turned into a musical with songs and lyrics written by Laurie Berkner. The musical is having it's second run in NYC from 7/13/13 to 9/8/13 and you should definitely take the kids to see it! The book is OK, but I ordered it based on the "very good" condition listed. As such, it won't work for us because the first page of the story was missing the bottom half, and we wanted to read it to our class in our Montessori school. That's just no way to start the story.

Awesome Cookbook!

I have bought several bread machine cookbooks over the years but by far this is my favorite. Just a wonderful variety of breads from the basic to interesting combinations of ingredients I would never have thought of. The key to baking a successful loaf of bread is sometimes a little trial and error. A bread recipe is only a starting point. A lot of factors can influence the outcome such as the type of bread machiine, type/brand flour, freshness of the yeast, altitude, humidity levels, etc. I can bake bread using the same exact recipe but if I bake it in the summer when it is really humid I usually need to add more flour as opposed to when I bake in the winter when the air is much drier. The approach that has worked for me is to first try the recipe as written keeping an eye on the consistency of the dough as it is mixing. Looks too runny, add more flour, too dry, add more water until the consistency is correct. I make notes on the page as to what I did so I can replicate it the next time. After trying the bread I will add more notes to the page such as: use more yeast, less sugar, try shallots instead of onion, etc. Using a bread machine to bake bread is so convenient and this cookbook makes it really fun.

Essential for the home bread maker!!!

We were visiting family. Every night we had a different home made bread(made in a bread maker). My wife and I have a bread maker but only used it every once and awhile. After the 4th day with family, we were discussing all the delicious and different breads. We asked where they got all their recipes from.... Well, this book was the answer. So I immediately order it on amazon. When we got home, it was waiting for us. The book is amazing. It has every kind of bread you could think of. We have made dough for nan, cooked raisin bread, sourdough, a multi wheat, and a few other off the wall breads. We now make at least 1 loaf of bread a week and sometimes two.

This book has really upped our bread making game. We love it!

Great Bread Machine Cookbook

I love the bread machine cookbook. I purchased it at the same time I bought my first bread machine. It has been extremely helpful with tips and has great recipes. They aren't kidding when they say bread machines aren't very forgiving when you don't follow the recipe exactly. It also gave helpful tips about cutting the amount of yeast back for high altitudes. Would definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in bread machines.
