Poorly written fan-fiction that only dedicated fans of the franchise will enjoy

Let me start off by saying that I am a complete fanatic when it comes to the BioShock series. I have played three entries countless times, and any time I come across some form of merchandise, I have to have it.

I happened to discover this work and The Big Daddy (also by author Brubaker) here on Amazon and decided to add them to my collection. While The Big Daddy definitely was an enjoyable read and I believe fit in quite well with the story of Rapture, Welcome to Genesis read like an elementary school horror story and is barely supported by any actual canon from the BioShock universe. Spoilers follow.

Set in the time following the events of BioShock 2, the book follows the story of Roosevelt (no first name given), a man working for the U.S. government, to find the mythical city of Rapture. He has his team wiped out, is kidnapped, and ends up in Rapture (now Genesis, hence the title).

What entails is Brubaker's interpretation of what happened to Rapture after Eleanor Lamb escaped from Rapture in BioShock 2. I am inclined to think that his story is meant to be in the universe where the truly 'evil' ending to the second game occurs, where Eleanor Lamb kills her mother Sofia as well as her protector/father Subject Delta. While there is no way of knowing exactly what happened to Rapture following her escape, Brubaker certainly took no shortage of liberties in creating his own world where Lamb returned to Rapture and took power again.

The one reason why I won't completely trash this book as garbage is because of his inclusion of items from the world of BioShock Infinite: salts and vigors. While these items do not belong in Rapture or this book at all, I cannot rule out the possibility that it is because of Infinite that this book is not complete trash: it is set in one of the infinite universes that Infinite brought into the scope of the world of BioShock. It may be nothing but a fan-fiction since creative director Ken Levine has said nothing about what occurred after BioShock 2, but the infinite-world possibilities that BioShock Infinite brought with it make the work a little more believable.

That being said, the nuances in the world brought about by technicalities created by the very games this book is supposed to take place in are not enough to save it. Short, choppy writing and lackluster details are not something one enjoys reading, and poor character development is poor character development. If the author had actually spent some more time on details and the book was edited properly (on the back cover of the book, Bathysphere is misspelled twice in the same sentence, see photo for evidence of both improper spelling and subpar grammar), Welcome to Genesis could actually have been a welcome addition to the BIOSHOCK universe.

Unless you are a dedicated fan of the BioShock series like I am and are interested in a fan-fiction about it, do yourself a favor and pick up Rapture by John Shirley instead of this book. I sincerely hope that if Brubaker releases any more entries, they are more like The Big Daddy and less like Goosebumps.

Good book, but story was alittle rushed.

Wasn't bad, the only problem was it lacked a lot of detail. I would've liked to know more about what everything looked like and what certain things felt like(don't want to give away any plot points). But I have no regrets, I bought, read and enjoyed it. I will never complain about returning to rapture!
